If you haven't already, this is the time of year where you may be approaching the donut hole. The “donut hole” refers to a coverage gap left over by most Medicare drug plans. It means, depending on the cost of your prescriptions, there may be a temporary limit on what the drug plan will cover for your drugs. In 2017, once the retail cost of your drugs has exceeded $3,700 you are in the coverage gap or “donut hole.” In the coverage gap you will pay 40% for name brand drugs and 51% for generics. Once your cost have exceeded $4950 you enter catastrophic coverage. People who get Extra Help paying Part D costs will not enter the donut hole.
Ways to help your drug costs…
Talk to your doctor about:
- Generics instead of name brands
- Higher dose that you can split in half
- If you are an insulin dependent diabetic, talk to your doctor about a pump vs. injections.
Annual Enrollment runs from October 15th thru December 7th.
