Timeline for Enrolling In Medicare

Turning 65 and Medicare: Blog 1

Starting something new can always be exciting.Starting Medicare can seem overwhelming to most of the people with whom we meet.It seems like the mail and flyers start coming in the mail the day after you turn 64.Here we are going to talk about the timeline leading up to turning 65.You will have a clear path as you get ready to start Medicare and turn 65.

As I mentioned the mail and advertisements start coming soon after you start turn 64 but at this point it is really too early to start to pay attention to any of the material. What’s most important at this point is know when your Medicare coverage would take effect. Your Medicare coverage will start the first day of the month you turn 65. If you happen to be born on the first day of the month, your Medicare coverage will start the month before you were born or age 64 and 11 months.

So now that we know when our Medicare coverage is set to begin, let’s talk about your enrollment period. This is a seven month long window of when you can enroll in Medicare Supplements, Medicare Part D stand alone prescription drug plans, and Medicare Advantage plans. This window opens 3 months before your coverage is set to start. So if you turn 65 in December your enrollment window begins September first.Your enrollment window also includes your birth month and three additional months, making the enrollment window 7 months long.

Most of our clients start to meet with one of our independent agents about two to three months before their enrollment window opens. We offer a meet and greet appointment. This appointment is all about education and not to sell one plan over another. We go over what is Medicare, what Medicare Part A and B cover, and more importantly what they don’t.We also cover what the different options for insurance or coverage are helping you to understand the difference between a Medicare Supplement and Drug Plan Part D compared to a Medicare Advantage plan.

So if you are getting ready to turn 65 you should start to look into your coverage options about 5 to 6 months away from turning 65.One of our agents would be glad to schedule an appointment with you so you can understand what Medicare is going to look like for you and which plan will best suit your needs and wants.Meeting with one of our agents is FREE.The only thing it will cost you is your time.We make all our recommendation based off your needs and wants. So you get the coverage that is best for you.We will continue to maintain this relationship from year to year.As you change and the plans change we can adjust your coverage annually to make sure your needs are still being meet.

Turning 65 can be simple and easy.Sun Coast Legacy Advisors is here to help you through the process.Email or Call today to schedule your appointment.
