Here at Sun Coast Legacy Advisors we have hundreds of clients who are currently enrolled into Medicare Part A & B and also have VA benefits.
You can have both Medicare and VA benefits but they do not work together. While you’re at a VA facility only your VA will pay for the benefits. In order for your Medicare to cover your care, you must receive care at a Medicare-certified facility.
It’s also important NOT to cancel your Part B benefits. Cancelling your Part B benefits would subject you to a penalty of 10% per year, in the case that you have to sign up for Part B at a later date. This penalty would have to be paid for the rest of your life!
Many of our VA clients are satisfied with the care they receive at their VA facility and choose to select a Medicare Advantage (Part C) to help cover cost they may incur at any civilian facilities. These plans usually have a low to zero monthly premium so you don’t have to worry about an extra monthly expense. Others may elect a Medicare supplement to cover the cost not covered by Medicare at a Medicare-certified facility.
Here’s a brief video explaining some issues that you may encounter with your VA benefits and why you may not want to cancel Part B.
