Medicare Part D RX Plans Information
Is it right for me?
At Sun Coast Legacy Advisors we stand ready to help. Our agents are licensed brokers who can clarify the program's ambiguities and help you select a Medicare plan that offers the coverage you need.
What you need to recognize first is that Medicare is more than just one insurance program. It's actually divided into four parts:
- Part A offers hospital benefits and is administered by the federal government.
- Part B, also administered by the federal government, provides physician benefits. These include such things as doctor bills, medical services, and some supplies that hospital insurance doesn't cover.
- Part C, otherwise known as Medicare Advantage, deals with HMO and PPO kinds of insurance plans. These are administered by private insurance companies who have contracted with the federal government. Though not administered federally, these plans still come under federal oversight.
- Part D delivers prescription drug benefits through what are called PDP plans. Again, these are administered by private insurance companies.
Medicare offers prescription drug coverage to everyone with Medicare. These plans are called Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, 'PDPs' or Medicare Part D and in Central Florida are often included as part of Medicare Advantage Plans. All Medicare Prescription Drug Plans are run by private companies approved by Medicare. Each prescription drug plan varies in cost and drugs covered.
There are two ways to get Medicare prescription drug coverage: The first is through a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. These plans add drug coverage to Original Medicare, Medicare Supplements or select Medicare Advantage Plans. The second is through Medicare Advantage Plans like HMO's and PPO's. Medicare Advantage Plans provide coverage for Medicare Parts A, B and D into one convenient plan. Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage are sometimes called MAPDs. In either case you must live in the service area of the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan you want to join.
Most Medicare drug plans have a Coverage Gap or 'Donut Hole'. This means there is a temporary limit on what the drug plan will cover for drugs. Not everyone will enter the coverage gap. The coverage gap begins after you and your drug plan have spent a certain amount for covered drugs. Once you enter the Coverage Gap, you will be responsible for 50% of the cost of covered brand-name drugs and 86% of the cost of covered generic drugs. Please click on the following link to learn more about the Coverage Gap.
If you decide not to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan when you are first eligible, and you do not have other 'creditable' prescription drug coverage, or you do not get Extra Help you will likely pay a late enrollment penalty.
